Shop Process

Shop work is the most time-consuming of the restoration process. It includes paint stripping, sanding, glass and hardware cleaning, wood repairs, parts replacement, joint stabilisation, priming, glazing, and final painting.

Paint removal is done by hand with the help of infrared heat and scrapers. Sanding is done both with power tools and by hand. Wood epoxy and salvaged wood is used to repair and remake parts of damaged sashes. Wooden pegs are made to replace the original steel pins, which have rusted and rotted out sash joints. Oil primer, mixed with a tung oil wood treatment nourishes the wood and provides the best substrate for the final paint coats. Linseed oil glazing compound takes several days to cure, which is followed by two coats of high-quality latex paint, applied by hand. Latex paint is best in this humid climate, due to its flexibility and weather resistance.
